ABOUT US
Flitesong is a private pet bird sanctuary that has operated for many years informally and for the past eleven years as a Colorado State Dept. of Ag licensed Pet Animal Care Facility (PACFA).
This is a place that offers a safe haven for finches to macaws. Flitesong's pet and aviary birds have come here for one or more of these reasons: they need to retire from life as a breeder bird; they have become difficult to handle and are no longer wanted as a pet, nor can they be safely placed as a pet; they are handicapped and need special caging or other help not usually found in a private home situation; they are in need of rehoming assistance due to a change in circumstances for their owner.
Flitesong welcomes all inquiries about placing a bird with us or applying to become a foster or to adopt a bird. A veterinarian's recent statement of health may be required before we can accept your bird. A home visit may be required before an adoption is completed. A home visit and references may be required before a bird can be placed or someone can become a Flitesong foster provider.
Visitors - None to Very Rarely
Flitesong is a private facility, so
is not available at this time for tours or random visits. Don't 'stop
by'; you will not be allowed into Flitesong. This is not a retail
establishment. It is a sanctuary, where minimizing disruptions by
visitors is paramount. When adoptions are considered, the bird is
brought to your home after we talk at length on the phone, by email, and/or in your home about what you are looking
for in terms of personality, level of care required, and what you have
to offer the bird.
Visits for the purpose of "looking around" Flitesong to see what
you like are not possible, based on how Flitesong is run at this time.
As a colleague of mine once wrote in a bird club newsletter, "...this is my
home; it is not a zoo open to general visitation by the curious.
And...If you are offended by the above, you are better off looking for
a bird somewhere else." Those of you who understand will be the kind of people I would like to see adopt a Flitesong bird.
Ways to Keep Your Birds
You may also contact Flitesong's owner for more information on how to KEEP your bird. For example, you may need help with behavior problems and are at that difficult decision point of whether to find the bird a new home or continue to work on a behavior issue that, if resolved, would mean the bird could stay with you.
Flitesong's owner is not a bird behaviorist, but may be able to offer suggestions or put you in touch with a certified bird behaviorist who can help. It is always a joy to find a way for an owner to have their bird stay with them.
